Cooling down in the summertime is a priority for Orlando residents. If you’re new to the area, you’re going to find that the opportunities for doing so abound. One of the best ways to chill out and have a little fun is to explore some Florida lakes. While there are plenty of saltwater beaches within driving distance of Orlando, summer vacations at one of the area’s lakes can provide a fun alternative that opens the door on some great fun.
Orlando Lakes and Activities
The Orlando area itself is home to more than 100 lakes and some other nearby getaways include Lake Underhill, Clearwater Lake and the Conway Chain. Not all lakes in the area have public boat ramps, but many do. So, what can you do on Florida’s lakes to beat the heat and have a great time in the process? Plenty!
Orlando residents will find that lakes often offer some of the best opportunities for water sports. It is within Central Florida’s larger lakes that many people enjoy water skiing, fishing, parasailing, jet skiing and more. While the oceans are also excellent for these activities, the lakes do tend to provide a more controlled environment.
Summer Lake Safety
There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as you explore Florida’s lakes with summer vacation fun in mind:
Boating safety – Florida law enforcement takes boating safety very seriously and so should residents and visitors. Be certain to understand the rules of the waterways and do not ever mix boating with drinking. Serious criminal charges can result for the operator of a boat. If hitting rivers or waterways is the plan, pay attention to warnings. Florida is just as serious about protecting its native manatee population.
Creature safety – Florida’s freshwater lakes are home to some amazing wild life. Pay attention to what is in and around the water when you visit lakes. Alligators, water moccasins and other creeping, crawling things generally stay away from humans, but it’s still a very good idea to be mindful that Florida’s lakes are their homes.
Sun safety – Make sure to bring along sun block and plenty of water when enjoying water sports in Florida’s lakes. The sun gets just as hot on these bodies of water as it does on the saltwater beaches. An ounce of prevention will spare you from days of blistering burn recovery.
