Ways to Gain Work Experience in College:
Volunteering – If your field provides volunteer opportunities, take advantage of them. This can look very good on a resume down the road and it will give you some hands-on experience. Try some volunteer organizations in your area or search for opportunities online. Volunteering in your field will also help you see if you’ve made the right career choice.
Shadowing – Check with your college to see if it has a shadowing program in your field. When you shadow an established professional for a day, week or even month or two, you will enjoy an eye-opening experience. This might even help you land a volunteer opportunity once the mentoring program is over. If your school cannot offer you access to a shadow program, check with professional organizations, such as the local chamber of commerce for guidance.
Joining a club – If your college or university has a club dedicated to the profession, join it. When you join a major-related club or organization on or off campus, you will find plenty of opportunities to get experience in your field before you leave with a degree in hand. If your school doesn’t have an on-site club, consider starting one or try seeking out junior membership in an organization for practicing professionals in the field.
Studying abroad – Whether you can find a study abroad opportunity in your field or not, life experiences also look good on resumes. Try to take advantage of any opportunity that shows you are on top of your game and responsible enough to flourish both at home and abroad. Study abroad programs are a very good idea for those studying a foreign language or international affairs.
Interning – Don’t discount the importance of joining an intern program. The summers are a great time to find an internship if you aren’t taking classes. There are tons of companies looking for interns all the time, and some internships are paid or offer stipends and course credit. If a company you are interested in does not necessarily advertise for an intern, contact the human resources department and see if they wouldn’t mind having an unpaid intern for the summer. It doesn’t hurt to ask, and you’ll gain useful experience to add to that resume.
Getting work experience while you’re still in college can help you on the road to success. There are jobs for college students out there, you just have to look for them. The more hands-on practice you have in your field, the better.
